Evolution is one of the strongest forces shaping our lives. It rewards those who contribute to it and punishes those who work against it. My wisest choice is to be humbled by it — and find my way of contributing.
I see design as my way of doing that.
I see design as the work of deciding how a system should work in a way that benefits everyone it touches.
I can design a system that favours some at the expense of others. This can work short-term, but evolution will eventually punish it. The better path is designing systems that work for the whole.
Better systems come from better decisions. I believe some decisions are genuinely better than others — and that while luck plays a role, the main driver is good thinking.
Good thinking is the product of expertise and experience. Expertise comes from understanding the world at a high level and your domain in depth. Experience comes from making decisions and honestly reflecting on what happened.
So I keep seeking better expertise and better experience — to make better decisions, shape better systems, and contribute to where we’re all headed.
(And it’s astoundingly fun.)
